US – Iran Tension

"No to War"

Despite Donald Trump’s frequent and absurd statements on Twitter, which highlight his incessant discourse of hatred, fear and incitement to war, it is clear the world does not want to engage in another war.

This became more evident in the past weeks, since Donald Trump decided to violate the international law, in response to the attacks to the American Embassy in Baghdad, by ordering US military forces to murder Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s senior military commander.

In an article tackling this issue, Mariana Mortágua, MP of Bloco de Esquerda, described Donald Trump’s policy as “the perfect marriage between electoral opportunism and absolute irresponsibility in conducting foreign policy”.

The assassination of Soleimani triggered a wave of revolt from the Iranian people, fostering a desire for revenge and fuelling the growing tensions in the Middle East.

Soon after these attacks, the international community, including the European Union, condemned the US president’s irresponsible way of dealing with international issues. Likewise, a press release by GUE/NGL, the European parliamentary group of Bloco de Esquerda, reminds the EU is not a mere bystander in this particular case:

“A war with Iran would have catastrophic effects for Iranians, the region and the world at large. Those effects would certainly be felt in Europe. The European Union has been a partner in US wars in the Middle East, including the so-called War on Terror, mostly through the NATO alliance. The EU has financed and armed wars, volunteered troops and propped up dictators. (…) The Left stands for non-intervention, following the lessons from history: War begets war, violence begets violence. The US-European interventions in the Middle East have undermined the role of the UN, weakened international law, and threatened global security.”

Donald Trump’s irresponsible foreign policy aims to promote the idea that the US are the owners of the world. Its imperialist approach, increasingly pushed forward by the current president, must not continue to destabilise the international arena, which can only become more unstable if the rest of the world continues to maintain its complacent stance towards the United States.

The world should know what to expect from the American president. In a recent article, Joana Mortágua, MP of Bloco de Esquerda, reminds us once again of Trump’s belligerent and many times incoherent behaviour: “with the election campaign approaching, perhaps the 2011 Donald Trump can travel to the future to tell President Trump 2020 the same thing he said about his predecessor: «In order to get elected, Barack Obama will start a war with Iran».”
