"Neither Maduro nor Guaidó"

The parliamentary leader of Bloco, Pedro Filipe Soares, mentioned that “the Venezuelan people’s desire to be able to freely and sovereignly decide their future is an aspiration we subscribe”.

Pedro Filipe Soares, parliamentary leader of Bloco de Esquerda, has recently spoken about the increasing tension and crisis in Venezuela, noting that Bloco de Esquerda has always criticised the “lack of democracy that has existed in Venezuela in recent years”.

Pedro Filipe Soares mentioned that “the Venezuelan people’s desire to be able to freely and sovereignly decide their future is an aspiration we subscribe” and that the pressure for a choice between the Maduro regime, “who didn’t know how to maintain this democracy, nor has a functioning economy, or “the choice of another president backed by Trump and Bolsonaro”, should not guide the Venezuelan people on the choice of their future. “For this reason, we call for a managed political solution towards free and democratic elections in a short time”, added Pedro Filipe Soares.

On Juan Guaidó’s self-proclaimed “interim president”, and the subsequent recognition by the Trump Administration, the parliamentary leader of Bloco de Esquerda said: “We see this process more in a geopolitical logic of defining the powers about the dispossession of oil wells in Venezuela rather than on the de facto interest of the Venezuelan people. Beyond this very short-term vision, a vision of the future for Venezuela can only be reached with free, participated, democratic elections and a political solution that mediates these elections”.

Pedro Filipe Soares also criticised the “political pressure from abroad, such as that promoted by Trump and Bolsonaro” and stated that neither Maduro nor Guaidó “have a clear legitimacy to rule Venezuela”.
